On Saturday, 28th February, Arran Tyson took on the Hell & Back challenge in support of his sister Laura Tyson O’Connor, while raising vital funds for Charlotte’s Vision, which supports metastatic breast cancer research at the National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI).
Arran, from Knocknacara, undertook the challenge for his eldest sister Laura, who received a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer while pregnant. Speaking about the experience, Arran said, “Once we had news of her diagnosis, with the added complication of her being pregnant, it was hard for us to comprehend the situation. But as a family, we knew we had to support Laura in any way we could.”
Laura, her husband Gabhan, and Arran’s nephew Ruairí, who was just 18 months old at the time, faced an incredibly difficult period. Halfway through Laura’s chemotherapy treatment, baby Bobby was born fit and healthy. “That was the kind of news the whole family needed,” Arran said. “Since then, Laura has finished her chemotherapy with positive results and is now moving on to maintenance treatment.”
Arran, who is preparing to run a marathon later this year, decided to combine his training with fundraising for metastatic breast cancer research. Hell & Back, which blends strength, endurance, and running, was a natural fit alongside his marathon preparation, including interval training and weekly runs.
He chose to support Charlotte’s Vision, which raises funds and awareness for metastatic breast cancer research at the NBCRI in Galway.
Arran would like to thank everyone who supported or donated, saying, “It’s such a great cause, and all funds raised will go towards vital research that helps Laura and so many others affected by breast cancer.”
